one thing i notice, is that when trying to eject a disc from an optical drive, ubuntu freaks and will not allow the drive to eject. i kept hearing this whirring sound all day (last night, i listened to some boards of canada). come to find out ubuntu appropriated the dvd drive, and i had to shut down the client to get the thing to stop spinning at full speed i don't remember this happening when using the commercial VMware app...come to think of it, the full on VMware installed virtual optical drive(s), which showed in 'my computer'. or was that daemon tools? ah, the blatherings of a total noob...

dave, after shuting down the vmware player to "pause" folding (as brew aluded to), my work unit still made it, unscathed. this is really handy, as in knowing the smp console client in vmware can be paused, or 'preserved', until you want to restart.
