In its first estimate, the United Nations reports about 10 percent of the housing in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince has been destroyed, leaving some 300,000 people homeless. The UN says a full assessment of the damages inflicted by the powerful earthquake will take several days to complete.

Donations pouring in from corporations:

# Bank of America announced a $1 million commitment to aid the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The commitment includes a $500,000 grant to the American Red Cross for the Haitian Relief and Development Fund.

# JPMorgan Chase also said it would commit $1 million.

# Citigroup has indicated that it will give $2 million, including $250,000 to the American Red Cross.

# Morgan Stanley has pledged $1 million.

# Goldman Sachs will pitch in $1 million, and Wells Fargo $100,000.

I wonder why things like that occur in a place where people already suffered so much in the last years... but that is not my business! As a geologist what I can say is that other similar events may (and probably will) occur again in the future. The earthquake was generated by movimentation on a fault parallel to the limits of the Caribean and North American plate. Considering that the event was not in the border of the plates we may say that it was just a colateral effect and we can also expect that there's much more energy still stored in the system. The movement of the 2 plates is subconvergent (they are colliding in a small angle) and in this condition the system may take very long time to acumulate enough energy to produce a big earthquake. It can explain why similar events didint occured in the known past.

I pray for those who died or are suffering there.

Vrosa, what is with all the Earthquakes all of a sudden. California has been shaking the past week and Eastern Venezuela today had a 5.6?

The earthquake in Venezuela may have some correlation with the one in Haiti, 'cos the northern part of the country is almost on the limits of the Caribean plate and South American one, but in this case the moviment is more transcorrent than compressive. The event in Haiti may have unstabilized the transcorrent system, that's what the temporal proximity sugests. But these are just my thoughts.

The case of California almost certainly has no correlation with the other two events. Earthquakes there are very commom due to the instability of that trancorrent system, it's very active. Since last week more than one hundred earthquakes occured there, but most of than are unperceptible for those who live there.

In most cases earthquakes originated in deep portions of the crust aren't dangerous. The one in Haiti was arround just 10 km deep.
