As a Linux user, I often end up with Gnome vs KDE etc. However my personal favorite is Gnome with KDE applications added to it.
I usually spend hours customizing my Ubuntu install etc. The project, Linobuntu aims to bring just that to users. No need to remove all the Gnome software and replace it with KDE. It is already done for you.
Named Linobuntu
I plan for it to have the following: (Please note this list has changed since originally posted).
1) The first release will be based on Ubuntu 8.04.1. Therefore all the changes and improvements in Ubuntu will apply to this disto.
This version was chosen as it is currently better supported and is more stable.
2) The desktop will use Gnome 2.23, however the gnome menu will be replaced with an improved version.
At the moment for the first release there are no plans to use the latest Gnome 2.24. That will be included in a later release.
3) A community theme and icon pack installed by default. This version might still use default splash screens etc.
4) The documentation in this release, will still be the default found in Ubuntu 8.04.1. However if everything goes according to plan, this should be changed in future releases.
5) Multimedia support will be out of the box, similar to what Mint Linux offers. Please note it is your responsibility to find out if you may use the installed codecs in your country.
6) Due to how the default Ubuntu scripts work, Linobuntu will be unable to provide Nvidia and Ati drivers out of the box. However to address this and make installation easier. Envy will be installed to assist users with installing their drivers.
7) At the current moment the first release of Linobuntu will be 99% compatible with Ubuntu 8.04.1 (therefore any extra software you will require will work fine if it is designed for Ubuntu 8.04.
8) Included software applications: (Some changes coming)
Amarok
aMule
KPDF (Can not legally include Adobe Reader)
Macromedia Flash support and Sun Java JRE
KGet (Downloader For X, could post legal issue thus replaced)
Google Picasa
Google Earth
Totem with all codecs and dvd playing support (MPlayer is too buggy and harder to implement)
NTFS Configuration Tool (ntfs-config)
K3B
k9copy
Amsn
Gtkpod
Ktorrent
Please note the following:
If you use Linobuntu, due to the fact it includes restricted software to allow multimedia playback. You must agree to the following, if not then do not use it.
1) The legal restrictions do not apply in your country.
2) You have permission to use the software, an official license.
3) You using this software for research purposes only.
