Microsoft said some upcoming products, including its Exchange 12 email server, will run only on 64-bit processors.

At a conference for its management software customers, company executives detailed its plans to add support 64-bit microprocessors in its server applications and operating systems.

By late next year, Microsoft expects to deliver Exchange 12, which will run only on x86-compatible 64-bit servers, said Bob Kelly, general manager of infrastructure server marketing at Microsoft.

Kelly said 64-bit chips will make the greatest impact on the performance of applications such as Exchange and its SQL Server database.

"IT professionals will be able to consolidate the total number of servers running 64-bit (processors) and users will be able to have bigger mailbox size," he said.

Longhorn Server R2 and a small-business edition of Longhorn Server will be available only for x86-compatible 64-bit chips as well the company's Centro mid-market bundle. Longhorn server is expected to be released in 2007 and the R2 follow-up could come two years after that.

To be fair, 64bit isn't all bad

I really love my pc, now MS will help make it better!

well its something thats been somewhat slow to catch on its good MS is truely pushing it now, if you look at it . If servers make the switch first, the desktops and notebooks will follow

I really wonder if its wise for Microsoft to start producing software for only the
64 bit platforum (ok its great for us, lol) but what about people who can not upgrade to the 64 bit platforum? Yes they will be forced to but is 64 bit tweaked enough for the mainstream? (I dont have a 64bit PC yet but am going to get one)

there will be a lot of initial resistence, but as always M$ will manage to convince people that the world will end without it and it will catch on

64bit is brill Lino, FAST as hell this pc!

Never gonna get a 32bit machine as my main computer

I doubt the change will happen in the home user space as fast as Microsoft would like - too many people are comfortable running old PCs until they are literally dead to rush to upgrade to x64.

oh yeah x64 windows has the power. and as tnt stated, it will be a slow process
for the "conversion" for many. when dell has it's mainstream rigs running dual
core athlons at THE price...and VISTA...(pipe dream?)
