Fresh from its ATI acquisition announcement, processor manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) today demonstrated a working four-core desktop system at a technology event held at its company headquarters. The four-core test system used two dual-core 2.8GHz CPU engineering samples, clocked at the same speed as AMD's flagship Athlon 64 FX-62 dual-core processor.
The four-core system outperformed a dual-core Athlon 64 FX-62 comparison system in several multithreaded, processor-intensive applications ranging from 3D rendering to video transcoding. AMD didn't reveal benchmark scores at Microsoft's request because the systems were running on Windows Vista software, which is still in beta. However, AMD representatives were able to show the performance differences by running the systems side by side in race scenarios. Not surprisingly, the four-core system finished ahead of the dual-core comparison system, often by a huge time margin.

well, i dunno...quad cores sound nice, but unless you have multi threaded apps to use with them (and your OS can take advantage also), it would seem more of a bragging rights issue (how many gamers will need to encode video, etc. while playing?)

Intel are looking very good at the moment. Their Conroe CPU is kicking ass so I wouldnt put it past them to gain the control again

Intel spent too much time sitting out and trying to develop the best they could that being Core Duo ... AMD isnt in any trouble ..AM2 + DDR2 + Quad Core = ...come on the rest is basic ...AMD didnt lose the lead they are takin a break

Well, I am one of the few rare ones around here who like Intels better than AMD's. As soon as a quad core comes out, I will have one. I do video editing, encoding, audio editing, among other things all the time. I think it would benefit me very well. I love my new dual core pentium D I have now. If the quad core shows significant increase in speed for my editing, it will be worth it.
