Basically, a pitcher throws a ball over home plate and a batter tries to hit it with a wooden bat where no player on the other team can catch it. If it hits the ground between the foul lines, the batter can run to first base. He can choose to try to run to second base or third base if he thinks he can get there before the ball is thrown to that base. The next batter then tries to get a hit so the base runners can reach home plate and score. If the ball is hit over the fence (about 120 m away), it's called a home run and the batter and every runner on base automatically scores.

There are many more rules. It's similar to rounders and cricket, but better.

Sorry guys I have NO interest in Baseball Especially since the Expos are gone. Now we have a stupid unused stadium that looks like a toilet bowl.

Fitting shape for the team that occupied it. They haven't gotten any better since moving to DC either.

Any fans here voting for the All-Star Game? You can do that here (allow popups for mlb.com for the ballot). The only heart vs. head choice of mine was Ankiel for NL outfield. I'd like to see him get an ovation in New York (where Knoblauch and others faced similar demons). My ballots:

Ah baseball...I wish I was home watching the great American League play a game. I have tossed in my votes for the All Star Game and it is hard to believe that the season is nearing half way. Time moves way too fast. One thought concerning baseball...I am TOTALLY opposed to instant replay for baseball. The game is one of human skill, talent, endurance, and judgement. To add the option of instant replay is over riding the human factor in the pureness of the sport. Part of the game (really much of it) is the human element. The camera takes much of that away. What would baseball be without an umpire to yell and boo at for a missed call (even if you only think he missed the call). So many things are ruined when the human element is removed. I really hate to see baseball reduced to the eye of the camera instead of the eye of the beholder. Whether the beholder is an umpire, a player, a fan at the ballpark, or a kid sitting at home watching his favorite team on TV, the game should stay the way it is as the great American past time..."Batter Up!"

Well, instant replay will only be used to tell whether a ball hit near the top of the fence or near the foul pole is a home run or not. Sometimes it's just impossible for an umpire to make that call, as has been proven at least three times this season. It ends up being a complete guess. If they can't afford to pay a couple of umpires to stand out near the fence, then instant replay is the only option to make sure they get those very important calls right.

And there will still be plenty of opportunities to boo the umpires.

I'd like to see him there, but I doubt it'll happen. His average is too low.



I had a hard time picking an AL shortstop. They all suck!

That editorial really put it into perspective. IIRC, Big Mac was at ~ 44 homers and Sosa ~ 41 when the "Andro" thing came up. Call it denial, naiveté, whatever---lots of fans just didn't want to, so didn't, believe it.

Now, well shoot; makes you think about guys like Juan-Gone, Wally Joyner, Cecil Fielder, et. al. They were all in the same time-frame as McGwire, Canseco, ****** Palmeiro....

Got-dayum, I hate the Cardinals. But this new season is really putting a stamp into my brain that, even though it is uncomfortable, we have to face the truth; forget all the guys breaking the records with steroids and HGH: Albert Pujols might well be the greatest baseball player since Mays and is probably in the top 5 of all time. Already.

Ring? Check. Multiple MVP's? Check. Batting Title(s)? Check.

Leading off the new season with 4 dingers in 4 games?!? Check.

Holy shite, I really wish that dude would go to another division.

The Astros have driven in 13 runs this season. Albert Pujols has driven in 14. If he stays healthy, I think he could win the triple crown this year. The last NL hitter to do it was Joe Medwick in 1937.

I'm really excited about this season. The Cardinals are fielding their best team since 2004 in my opinion. They won 105 games that year. I'm not sure any other team in the division can compete with them, but anything can happen in a 162 game season.

If Carpenter and Wainright stay healthy, you guys should have the division wrapped up by July. Lohse or whatever his name is might be the weakest link but will probably still win 8-10 games.

The 'stros are terrible, the Pirates are just a little ahead of completely awful, and the Cubs, Brewers, and Reds will beat each other up to the point where it's a race to 80 wins and mediocrity.

Still, I think the Pennant will stay in Philly this year. They went and actually got better this off-season.
