LOL....compaq's are junk. Unless it was listed like above I'd be a bit doubtful of the quality you're getting.

I'm gonna take exception with you on the Gateways. ever since the eMachines merger, the Gateway model have gotten much better (and affordable). In fact, my primary machine is a Gateway notebook running XP x64. You can't beat the performance in that price range. That's speaking from personal experience.

Speaking from the perspective of one who worked as a PC tech, I can honestly say that I saw far more Dells, HPs and Compaqs come in for service than Gateway, eMachines, or even homebuilt PCs.

that's because Gateway and eMachines are affordable, when they crap out, throw them away :P

Actually, I've seen the other way around here. I hear of a LOT more people calling me about their Gateway than with thier Dell. As a matter of fact, the only one that has ever given me an trouble is the dell I am on now... But that was self inflicted with ignorance :D

No, and the PC World annual reader surveys bear this out. eMachines/Gateway was #2 in the survey, whereas eMachines was #1 the year before. Dell dropped another spot to #3, largely because of the issues surrounding the XPS2 notebooks, the business-class PCs that had the bad capacitors, and tech support matters that ticked off a lot of Dell users.
