I have an ASUS A8V-E Deluxe with 4 GB of RAM and an AMD x64 FX-55 CPU. I just pulled it to install a new motherboard, CPU and memory and PSU.

I pulled the board out of the machine with the RAM, cpu/heatsink and fan as it was assembled since I was just going to put it in a cheap case and continue to use it or pass it on to a family member.

I wanted to be sure everything worked, so I set it up to test outside the case.

I now am encountering an issue I've never seen before.

Now, for some reason, even though I don't have a power switch hooked up to it, when I turn on the PSU, everything including the hard drive powers up... fans spinning on the CPU heatsink, lights on the board are on but it does not POST. No tones, no beeps, no nothing.

I highly doubt I did anything wrong when removing the assembled components, but I had a bad week and perhaps it was just one more thing that went awry for me.

I've tried everything I can think of to no avail.

Any ideas? Anyone?

and just what are the specs of this new system? did you also have a mouse and keyboard hooked up? mine wont post unless i have a keyboard attached

Besides just turning it on what have you done to diagnose it?
Did you have it overclocked? Did you re-set the bios?
Have you tried a different PSU or are you using the same one that it was hooked up with before?

Have you unplugged everything except one stick of memory, cpu and video card?
Even without a hard drive you should be getting a bios post if the video card is working properly, if not everythig will power up but you will never get a post- not even a beep.

Try taking the video card out and re-insert it.

Don't connect any hard drives until you are sure everything else works- you want to go one step at a time until you find the problem.

ThermalTake 850 Watt PSU
ATI HD 3600 series (in dire need of an upgrade here)
4 x 2 GB Corsair XMS DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) RAM
CoolerMaster CM Stacker (why change a good thing)
2x 1 TB Seagate Sata Drives (I'm waiting for prices to drop on the SSDs. They will eventually I hope!)

I found the issue with my A8V-E Deluxe after messing with it a while... It was a puff of smoke that came out of one of the chips on the motherboard a few hours ago. It's some kind of semiconductor about 3/8 of am inch square next to the PCI-E slot.There's a tiny hole burned in it now. In other words, it's roached.

I'm still unsure if the CPU is shot as well since I don't happen to have a spare socket 939 motherboard laying around.
