Hi all

i am trying to fix a friends computer problems, the last one has got me stuck, In the "My Documents" Folder all the info writing under each folder or file is turning blue.

any ideas how to get it back to black.

Are you talking about the folder titles? If so that means that the hard drive has drive compression enabled. If you want to turn it off (which I'd recommend if there's enough free space) then just go to My Computer- right click main drive- Properties- General tab- Uncheck Compress drive to save drive space. Depending on how many folders are compressed and how big the drive is it might take awhile, but as long as you have enough space this will actually speed up the drive access time.

You steered me in the right direction.

Yes I was talking about the folder titles, but i was only the folder that was compressed, not the complete drive.

How i fixed it.
The "My Documents" folder is on another drive so i went to My Documents\Properties\Advanced Attributes and un-ticked the box "Compress contents to save space" then click "apply".

maybe no the guy will stop nagging me, ha ha

No problem, anytime! That does it too. Although you could still check then uncheck the drive option and it would set every single file/folder to noncompressed, that was probably the easier/faster way anyways. Glad it was resolved.

A small offtopic, but what is the "compres file/folder/disk" used for? isn't it fairly useless from what I read here?

It was mentioned that it is useful if you have a smaller hardrive. It can save you a good amount of room, but slows down access times.

It's actually a part of the Disk Cleanup utility. There's an option to compress files not used after X number of days (this option also usually makes the utility lag the most). It might be useful for people with drives under ~ 15 GB with not much space left but more of a hassle for people with lots of free space.
