Ummm... my upgrades are so numerous and frequent it's difficult to keep track. Some of the most recent ( last 6 months) in 2 different rigs included...

A pair of 9450s
Rampage Formula
Maximus Formula
8 GB G.Skill PC8500
8 GB of G.Skill PC8000
2 Thermochill PA.2 Rads
2 X3870s with EK waterblocks
D-Tek Fuzion V2
OCZ Ram Cooler

I was planning on 2 X4870s on June 25th. The release has been postponed till July 8th so now it looks like a GTX280 or 3 8800GTs. One of the guys can get over 4K ppd out of his 8800GT.

Why all the hardware??? To keep my points competitive folding wise. There is a new guy on the team that's appropriated about 45 school computers and he's putting up around 34K ppd. ;) My current farm is good for about 24K. If I don't launch a counter attack he'll run me down in less than a year. :friends:

Why don't you just build one of those "super computers"?
They seem to be getting cheaper all the time.
What costs millions 20 years ago can be had for a couple thousand now.

Here's a budget "supercomputer" and the way to build it.-

You could probably build it for less than $1000 now- or you could upgrade to get better performance.

Check the bottom of the "Uses" link- he uses it to run Folding @ Home but doesn't say how it performs.

Maybe you could e-mail him if you're interested.

Just some perspective-

"Deep Blue" cost $5 million in 1997 and has less than half of the computational performance of the $1200 Microwulf!!!

Likely at the end of the year, I've been waiting patiently for the Quad Core Nehalem CPU's that will have HT. Tri channel DDR3 and even better... onboard memory controller. I cant wait!

Nothing grabs my attention these days, nothing to warrant a decent upgrade anyway. All mainboards above my P35 have nothing to shout about (apart from cost) and the GPU side has slowed to a crawl, even the new Nvidia 260/280 does nothing to set the gaming scene alight. RAM costs have come down a lot, but I see no real need to upgrade from 2Gb for a long time.

Now, a Nikon D3, that's where my cash is going soon

Thanks Roady! I'll definitely make some inquiries. I have the feeling the F@H clients won't run well on it. Shiet! Their SMP doesn't even run well on a quad. You turn in more WUs in less time running 2 smp clients on a quad. They have nothing that runs well on Octacore server boards so I fear building a Microwulf for folding would be like pissing in the wind. :friends:

Yea, I kinda stopped the computer upgrades as well. The market hasn't had any big developments this year so I'll wait probably a year. I'm gonna buy a new car instead in a few weeks.

I don't follow the hardware industry at all anymore. I'm happy with my dual-core and 2 gigs or RAM. I don't plan on upgrading until it stops working.

I upgraded back in march to a quad core and an 8800GTX on 4gb of ram.

these days this stuff is alllooott cheaper still im gonna sit on this until Q1 2009 coz the new GT200 is not enough of an upgrade to upgrade from an 8800GTX and i want to wait for Intels "Tock" and get a nice Nehalem platform.

If your gonna get a GPU now, get a 9800GTX, its allot more Performance per $
