Longhorn (since Beta1 called Vista) was in parts fun, in others slow and a pain.
With this OS however we witnessed many things that shaped what we are going to get and where we stand with Microsoft today.
Instead of my ramblings though a few points...
The sidebar has GONE people!!!
DWM is now the main toy
It's starting to get impressive with Black themes in latest vista and the old slate/aero we saw in earlier builds, before then it was BLUE with a theme called Plex.
Some screenies i found below...
LH4015 - Earlier Lh build with Plex theme
Longhorn 4053 - so far in the middle, with black theme...SLATE
4074 with some EARLY DWM/Aero effects
Build 5048, a recent release...last build before it became VISTA

I am looking for a very old build to add to my collection: Windows Longhorn 4011 (March, 5 - 2003).
Did someone put hands on it. I could see some scrennshots of it and also found a broken torrent, nothing else.

I like Longhorn 4066, it's a server build and it's quite stable compared to other client builds.
LH 4066:

In the past I've played a lot with original build 4074 and Longhorn Reloaded. I'm trying to install some updates on it. I could install .net framework 1.1 and MSXML 4.0 SP3, but no sucess for .net 2.0 and MSXML 6 SP2. I'm wondering if I can get Office 2007 installed on it... Probably not, but...
LH 4074:

I manualy registered msxml6.dll and msxml6r.dll sucessfully. Let's see what happens.
~update 14/12/09~
In general lines 4066 is doing the job better than 4074, it's fast and quite stable.
~update 14/12/09~
After some tweaking and customizing LH4066 becomes something usable.

To install Windows Defender in Longhorn you must edit the .msi file and change LaunchContition values.
Set: VersionNT > 400 and VersionNT < 700
You can use Orca Msi Editor:

PS: One annoying thing is that automatic update is not working. I had to manually download the latest definition files, but I can live with it.
*********************************
It's also possible to edit the update.inf file that comes with some Microsoft Hotfixes in order to install in Longhorn. Simply extract the contents of the executable file and config the "Version" section of file update.inf like below (example for LH4066).
[Version]
CatalogFile = %SP_SHORT_TITLE%.cat
LanguageType = %LangTypeValue%
MaxNtBuildToUpdate = 9999
MaxNtMajorVersionToUpdate = 7
MaxNtMinorVersionToUpdate = 9
MaxNtServicePackVersion = 9999
MinNtServicePackVersion = 000
NtBuildToUpdate = 4066
NtMajorVersionToUpdate = 6
NtMinorVersionToUpdate = 0
RebootRequired = 1
Signature = "$Windows NT$"
.
PS: This is also useful to install some hotfixes to Windows 2000.
