does anyone know how to get the photoshop "scratch" to run in memory? or does it do this already if there is "enough"? kinda goofy if it still relies on disk space...

It still relies on disk for memory, but you should be ok as you have fast drives? :friends:, also, Adobe recommends that you set the primary scratch disk to a different hard disk than the one Windows uses for its virtual memory or paging file.

Here is how I have mine set (CS4 mind you)

Attached File  theshop.PNG   38.38K   7 downloads

Move the drive without pagefile to the top of list, so as PS will use that first :)

I've upped a video from the Mr Photoshop himself (Deke McClelland) collection on setting up Photoshop correctly, it's a .mov file which plays just fine in WMP on Win7 now :giggle: It's for CS4, but most still applies to CS3.

Attached File  Setting_general_preferences.rar   3.74MB   9 downloads

thanks man, i just wanted to remove as much disk stuff going on (memory would be a lot faster, and cleared when you reboot). i would have thought cs4 would have offered this (do you still have to have two copies of PS, one 32 and one x64 on x64 windows? i would have gone cs4, but don't like the bloat...reeks havoc trying to work with 32bit only plugins).

Still 2 copies get installed on x64, but I haven't noticed that they are bloated, myself being Mr Bloat Paranoid. :graduated: When installing CS4, your best to take the 'custom' option and disable the unnecessary bloat from installing, Adobe Air, Ext Manager etc. etc.

Under Windows 7, PS x64 has a nasty habit of crashing frequently, more so when trying to use any of the built in filters, so I refrain from using it ATM until it gets fixed, pity, as its darn fast.

PS x86 works just fine though, more so with the new GPU acceleration :)

Not sure why but when i fired up my version of PShop CS3 today, the one I upped to our batcave with a keygen long ago, I got an error message saying, "You cannot use this product at this time. You must repair the problem by uninstalling and then reinstalling this product or contacting your IT administrator or Adobe customer support for help."

I had removed all Adobe 'updaters' long ago but, still, even after I reinstalled and used a different key---it installed but I still get that message. Weird.

I'm 'buying' CS4 now to see if it works. Very strange.

:) It's remarkably affordable. I only hope no one upps a working keygen with crack to the "torrentz" or "ftppss" of tech forums. If i find such a thing on any ftp servers that I frequent there will be hell to pay. If anyone here finds an Anon upload of such a thing, please let me know so I can bring hell down. :graduated:

found the answer: ramdrive! works like a charm. cs3 sees it as a drive, and it is now the dedicated scratch drive (2 gigs of my memory is used, and i save a blank disk image so i can have it show up again as a drive in windows). i'll see how it works being reloaded at the next reboot...

Time to upgrade then Hoggy boy  :rofl_mini:, but only if your using 'boyz toolz' like the 'shop'. PShop will grab all the RAM it needs and then some, regardless of what 'scratch' you have set lol. The 'scratch' is there to ensure PShop has enough to fall back on when RAM is at its minimum, kinda like a pagefile of sorts. Having 30Gb RAM wont make a jot, as PShop will take it all, and still use the 'scratch' regardless, more so when working on multi-layered images. :rofl_mini:

heck, i can also setup torrent files there too, so not too many small writes to the drives...just ordered 4 more gigs to make a larger drive
