What i have noticed is setup has gained some speed.
Aurora appears at the end of setup in the background briefly while you run a configue Wizard

Yes I have also noticed a speed up in setup. Im now basically waiting on my other pc, Ive clicked Start on the "You're ready to start" screen and it isnt doing anything. Anyone else had this problem? Im hoping it will just spring into life like it usually does

Here is mine right now.

One thing i noted is that the picture on my startmenu changes as i highlight different things. For example if i go over my documents the palmtrees become a document folder. On my music it becomes CD's...and so on.

This effect is NOT new, there was a build from around Longhorn 4074 that had this effect but it was never publicly released. It goes to show no matter how old an Alpha was it shapes what is here now!

So for those of you who have tried it, how stable is it? And what current software works in Vista? I've heard that a lot of stuff from XP won't work in Vista (yet anyways...)

well so far its cool, works with old software. Its been stable and so far i am loving it.
The finished product should be ace, this build is great!

someone did tell me this build didn't work with Office12. This may of been done on purpose.

Thank you to Serbman over at Microbeta for this. A way of speeding up Vista 5308.

As lot of us noticed, Vista 5308 is running slow sometimes due to the fact that this build has a lot of processes and services running in the background (48 at first boot). This number increases as you install software to test, so if you have a small amount of RAM (like me, 768 MB), then you should stop some services that are taking ressources in the background. Listed below are the ones that I disabled for now to make it run faster.

By disabling these, I did not notice any missing elements (so far) that are required to run the OS. All that to mention that there is a lot under the hood of this build and that it needs to be reorganized, optimized.

*Before we start, I need to mention that I (and microbeta.net) don't take any responsibilities if you mess up something with your OS. It's totally up to you to do these things, so be aware of that fact, please.

To access the services: hit the windows key + R, type services.msc and click allow. To modify a service, simply double-click on it and then stop and in the start-up list box, choose disabled. then apply and repeat the process for other services.

Here are the ones that I've disabled, without noticing any difference:

- Computer browser (don't disable it if you are sharing ressources among a local network)
- External memory devices management service
- human interface device access
- internet connection sharing (required for networking)
- media center extender service
- media center receiver service
- media center scheduler service
- media center service launcher
- network access protection agent
- network list service (referred to the LAN tray)
- offline files
- prnp auto registration
- print spooler (if you do not use a printer)
- routing and remote access
- secondary logon
- superfetch (new service, not sure about its credibility)
- tablet pc input service
- task scheduler
- tcp/ip netbios helper
- windows error reporting service
- windows firewall (up to you to disable it...)
- windows search service (disable it if you never use it)
- windows time
- .net runtime optimization service v2.0.50727_x86
- fax (if you do not use a fax)
- eaphost
- file replication
- health key and certificate management service
- interactive services detection service
- link-layer topology discovery mapper (disables the map of the network in network center)
- distributed transaction coordinator
- server
- upnp device host

Also, verify that you do not have any start-up item that is useless in the config. utility (hit windows key + R, type msconfig and click allow. Browse to startup tab and only leave checked windows operating system and windows defender).

Last, you can disable some of the visual effects that you don't really see...

To proceed, click on that rounded windows flag, navigate to computer, right click and select properties. At that point, click on advanced system settings and select settings... of the first group box (performance).

Uncheck the following checkboxes:
- animate windows when minimizing and maximizing (if you are experiencing sluggish effects)
- fade or slide menus into view
- fade or slide tooltips into view
- show preview and filters in folder (completely up to you...)
- show translucent selection rectangle
- slide open combo boxes
- use a background image for each folder type
