Not exactly, yes you will loose all data UNLESS you get a live boot version and run like that. I find linux to be a little more complicated to install it's more specific of your needs/wants than what Windows does, but all in all It makes for a better and customized OS. Generally it takes longer to install a Linux OS but it's worth it.

You can install without losing your data. The big linux distros (Suse, Fedora Core, Mandriva) have programs that partition your hard drive. What you do is defrag your drive in Windows, then boot the installation disk and when you get to the partitioning part you tell it to shrink your Windows partition and install onto the free space. The program determines how much free space is available and you pick how much to use. It will also create a swap partition, so you'll have at least three partitions on the drive. It sounds scary, and you certainly need to do a back up before you do it. But I've done it several times with no problem. The Linux distro will then install a boot loader to your MBR and when you boot after that you'll have the choice between Windows and Linux. You can set either one to be the default. I'm sure there's a Windows program to shrink your partition, but I couldn't tell you what it is (or if it's free). And, of course, there's always using a second hard drive.

Do a search for Windows Linux dual boot how to. There are a million of them.

Give Linux a shot. I'ts very cool.
