hey all,

anyone know if a heatsink fan will spin on a machine with a bad/dead mobo but working power supply? I know the power is, obviously, supplied via the motherboard but if the chipset or something else went bad on an otherwise good mobo will power pass through? tia.

bad chipset, yes.
just happened to my daughter's old rig. it would stay lit for a moment, then shut down, if i removed the gpu, it would run, ie fans, etc. would be going. i went through the motions, and nada. bad chipset. tried 3 different psus, two known working gpus. they all had the same results.

Gotcha. The dead mobos I've seen have resulted in an otherwise fine PSU not even turning on via the computer's power switch but this one does. Guess she burnt her chipset (no euphemism). Thanks MO. :giggle:

hope she didn't lose any data. the first sign here was the pata channels went. nothing would work on them, then the system, when past post, would hunt for the sata raid os array, then shut down (she lost all her stuff, as it was an nF4 board, raid0 :giggle: ), and the next was the pci-e, so i assumed chipset. good news is i found a niffty little mini atx asrock amd board for $60 bucks (and an am2+ cpu for the same price!). runs super, and has got me interested in a mini rig of my own.

:withstupid: yep the storage bus goin out mite just mean southbridge but the loss of the pcie bus def says NB/chipset (since the NF4 is an 1 chip solution ,all symptoms say chipset ) :giggle:...hmmmm just an added thought, in retrospect, it seems every chipset that I've had go bad has been nvidia ......hmmmm
