Bloom Energy has actually been operating for 8 years, raising $400 million in funding from VCs including Kleiner Perkins (investors in Netscape, Amazon, Google and others). Its “Bloom Box” houses fuel cells that run on oxygen plus natural gas, landfill gas, bio-gas or even solar.

The company’s first customer was Google, which has been powering a datacenter on 4 Bloom Boxes for 18 months. Google’s boxes run on natural gas. eBay is also a customer — the company has 5 Bloom Boxes in San Jose, which it says have saved $100,000 in energy costs over 9 months.

It can use Solar, but the real good thing is, its clean burning. And with google applying for and getting a go ahead for Google Energy to buy and sell electricity in bulk like any other utility. makes me wonder if they may be trying this out in different areas for residential. Time will tell

Cool, cool! Can't wait to see that kind of electrochemical solution in our houses. I got impressed when that guy said that just 1 cell can supply a light bulb. Let's see what heppens next !

From $700,000 down to $3000 in 5-10 years sounds a bit optimistic to me. I'm looking forward to the announcement on Wednesday nonetheless.

The news about Google Energy is interesting too. Definitely seems like there's a connection with Bloom. Maybe Google Ventures provided some funding for it.
