the people over at win raid have a method of injecting nvme support into older/'unsupported' uefi capable board bios'. i now have a bootable volume (server 2016) on a samsung 960 evo nvme m2 ssd (pcie, in a pcie slot adapter, w/heat sink) on my rampage IV gene socket 2011 mobo.
i also modded my ati 7970 to have GOP support, so i can now use secure/fast boot, along with disabling the CSM module, so total uefi!!!
single drive, (pcie 3.0 x 4 m2) in a x16 slot:

Decided it was time for another nvme drive, so found a pcie adapter card on ebay (asus hyper mini m.2), and ordered a mydigital 128gb drive for $65! I may look into getting one of those multi drive adapters, so I can add more nvme drives, as my mini atx board had just two pcie slots available (x16 and x8)

I have injected an Asus server board (Z9DA-D8), dual socket, and am waiting for the cpus to arrive. This will be a Windose machine, not sure re water cooling at the moment, but it would be cool to attempt...it has bifurcation options, so...yeah.
