For a Linux noob, I have had luck in dual-booting with Windows. Thanks God ! :(
Well, i have never really had many problems with dual booting...hell i had a nice multi-boot going: i had XP x86, XP x64, Vista x86, Vista x64, Xubuntu and Kubuntu (Xubuntu running dual head too). They all booted up fine with my old setup (Asus MB and 754 AMD64 3400) but then i decided to get greedy and try and get SuSE in on the action. That is when it all went downhill. :sphere: LOL.

I got the Ubuntu 7.04 to boot into the live version on my X2 biostar box, but i had to disable the apci in the bios to do it; this means that i might try my hand at another multi boot here some time. But first i need another hdd to support all the OS's. Another 320gb or 500gb would do nicely. But this is in the distant future. Vista works great for now...although when in Ubuntu 7.04 it recognized my wireless card (but i couldn't get it to connect). :P

Vista will do donkey, Vista will do...

sounds to me like you have decisions decisions...lol
I say vista smishta ....

Ok to be honest with ya... I dont know too too much except what I hear from viper, what I read, what Ive been able to play around on (and it hasnt been much), and from what Ive seen with points production on another team. (and Im all for points...lol) With my lil crappy 3.2 p4... I dont get the option to run the linux vmware/smp (i will once I get to vipers and I get my own amd to play on :gsg9: ) but I tell ya ... IF i could... id run open suse on its own... screw vista.. and all that jazz... (open suse is a much better) BUT their are growing pains when learning linux. It was after all written by geeks for geeks and at times can be less user friendly than windows (whether viper is willing to admit it or not...lol) BUT IT DOESNT LAST FOREVER (thats not directed towards you btw... you seen pretty sauve with linux.. im just dumping it all out...lol).... the desktop is sweet... it runs amazing... i love it... its sooo snappy on vipers amd... I could go on forever but I wont.... ( I LOVE civ....) From what Ive heard and from what I understand... when you run straight linux, its linux's kernal that runs what ever show the kernal runs and thats important for folding because the linux ones do a better job than the windows kernal. And when you get into compiling your own kernals week after week... (which should be our linux folders goals... but more to come later *wink wink*) sometimes they stay the same for a few months... watch how many minutes you can reduce on your frame times... its like overclocking beyond... you can only overclock so much... but then in linux... you can compile kernals and make your machines run ever faster n gain even more points for folding. Im gonna say the infamous line usmc has been saying.... what is vista????? Ive seen what it does... Ive seen the points difference...

The other factor youll want to consider is how many pc's are you playing with ... are they dedicated folders or are these the machines you search the net n stuff with... (which you can do all on suse... but we are talkin comfort factors now and like myself... not a lot of people like change... but you dont seem like one of those folks) For dedicated folding machines... linux is the best way to go as youll see... it produces the most points. And since electricity costs for this program are not considered a "donation" on our income tax claims nor are the pc's that are bought for folding... ya might as well get as much bag for your buck as possible.

Now youve got The biostar...( has too many options if you ask me)... asus has always been the better board even though people complain there isnt enough options... (for the record .. you dont need em! thats why asus doesnt bother putting them there *cough*) but please dont think Im rippin up your pc cuz im not the least bit... the deal they were offering on newegg a while ago with the amd/biostar... was great... even got viper to buy one and I guess I should also state... the only reason Im not a real big fan is because all the time he spent playing on that biostar thing when i was visiting... would have been done in no time on an asus board. (and that time could have been better spent playing with me...lol) SO I admit... Im a lil biast against the board from the get go. But the deal was great so it was worth it, and the amd makes it a great folder. Viper will defend the board even though Im not a fan... so i have to say something good about it ...lol I dont want to hear it later :gsg9: But anyway it does seem to have its limits thanks to the options.

Now all hail your amd's because unlike the c2d's you can burn a cd, while surfing the net and still fold. what to doooo what to doooo.

So... you can run all these things through all these things if ya must but u are kinda limited from what I understand with a biostar ( or if theres a way just do it cuz ya can... like intels wish they could  )but I wonder what it does to folding in the end... and is it really worth it to have it all .... i dont know yet... and I AM ALL ABOUT THE POINTS ... so sorry all my opinions n help with be biased towards that and you dont have to listen to me if you dont want to...lol but I dont give up easily :gsg9: hopefully you can tell me though if there is a benefit in it for points and what it is..... so ill know when it issssssss my turn next month :gsg9: But if you ask me... Im all about the points...
points points points points points    :gsg9:
(Ill never get vipers #1 position in 24 hour avg.. or ever be able to catch him in points... but i can take number 2 :gsg9:)

None of this may have made any sense and to be honest... thats ok I dont know too much to actually solve your problem... but I have opinions based on what ive heard and been able to grasp...lol and youll either like em... or not...lol Im learning myself and ya gotta admit.. Im doing pretty good since what I know is what Ive heard, read... with no hands on experience as of yet I rock....lol now dont let any of that discredit me... I am after all connected to the grand master linux dude LOL .... and come may 19th... watch your backs cuz Im a coming for ya.

VG

:sphere: :P :(

Oh yeah.. if for some unknown reason to me (cuz i am soooooooo very much a noob) you have to have vista running on your box.. you can just scratch everything i said... let me know... Ill ask viper what to do since hes got one... and Ill go back to what i dooooo best
singing my canadian idol song and

:dancing4:

and since the leafs are not in play off hockey *cries*
GO AMD GO.

and mo ... for the record... viper can be an arrogant ass its true...lol but he isnt all the time... i swear... ( i love that couch cuz i tell ya i could have used it...lol) but... so ya know... viper is really good with linux and works out his kinks when he gets them ( if he gets them.. to him "it just runs". ) not all have that luck but he also doesnt want anyone on the team to get discouraged from using it ( he really knows better than anyone what it can do for the folding team) ... and he thought your post would scare them from it ( i have pointed out to him how many have started it up so chill out) ... if it was a "help" thread you would have seen a totally different side... but even then .. he can still be a lil rough around the edges... I know cuz he even pisses me off when I ask for help...lol but he will help ya getting it running if ya need or want it and hes got a lot of knowledge to share and is 110% an amd guy.

I think too this is your only pc to play with.. so that totally adds to your frustration n i understand, but dont ask a guy who "it just works for" to understand... lol... so thats folding viper in a nutshell...
