If you're talking about the 8800GT, I don't think I've seen any reviews/benches where it "beat the pants" off the 3870. I know it's got slightly higher FPS on average but that it's more of a 150fps vs 170 fps issue from what I've seen.
I think 3870s are dx10.1 compatible while 8800gts aren't...and that the 3870s are more hdmi friendly...
As far as the price difference, lookin around on newegg tells me that they're almost identical except that the 3870s seem to be averaging 230 u.s. smackers and the 8800gts average about 250 u.s. smackers.
So, in my opinion, they're both great cards, offer awesome bang for the buck, are dx10 compatible, leave the upgrade path open with sli or crossfire, but in the end it's really just a question of personal taste.
