I first tried Redhat 8 which was probably a good start for anyone.

i would say play with it, you won't like it maybe cos you kinda feel cut off from the computer your on for a while, and the alternative apps don't warrant using it always, so stick it on a spare pc.

My first linux distro I tried was Suse Linux 7.2 Pro Edition (came with 7cds and 1 DVD) I really loved that distro but not as much as I love Ubuntu

RH 5.1. The CD came with Sams' Teach Yourself Linux in 24 hours book. ;-)
