as everyone+dog knows, i have had several issues with running just about any Linux distro as of late ( ). after reassigning my optical drives, and using a different .iso burning app, i am now having the best Linux experience of my life! my audio is card working, nvidia drivers and beryl are configured (amarok is just fantastic, by the way ) at this point, i'm so pleased with the "completeness" of this, the latest release of Mandriva. the new KDE/Mandriva gui is slick, and, coupled with beryl, makes for a very exciting and enticing interface. menus are clear: i find it easy to navigate around. hardware detected, and drivers galore (scsi raid0 out of box!). office and graphic utilities are included, and you have the option of installing server oriented components. i gotta say, Mandriva really shines in this release. i'm stoked!

update:
when trying to watch online video files, the default app would crash, and even after a reboot, the app would load and continue to freeze. i ended up uninstalling it. the "sound system" would also crash/freeze, and continue to do so every time the system was rebooted (i hope my power switch works tomorrow, as i had to do cold shutdowns many many times). while the gui enhancements are fun, when things go south, they become an aggravating distraction. the last time i tried to play a cd, the audio disappeared. the first hour of use, it seemed stable beyond any other distro i had tried, but after hours of doing common tasks, the crashes and freezes became too much, to the point i was afraid to click on any of the many multi media apps, for fear i would have to cold boot yet again. i did use all the fancy desktop gui stuff, and the oss audio drivers (you should be able to use your gear, drivers and all, without issues, in a desktop environment. if you can't, well...), so you may have less issues if you go vanilla gui, but why would you if the candy is there, within reach? i know, linux in a server environment is highly regarded, but to me, the desktop market is a bit in the future, quite a bit (for an "average joe consumer" like myself).
