The highest-end z10 processors use five quad-core die packages and two service cores; that's 20 cores at 4.4 GHz, 60 MB of L2 cache and 48 MB of shared L3 cache on a single processor.

IBM was in the news in early February 2008 for proposing a single supercomputer capable of hosting the entire Internet as a web application. With the z10, IBM's ambitious plan might not be that far of a pipe dream.

The new System z10, with a starting price at about $1 million, comes as IBM focuses on lowering the price tag for running its storied line of data-crunching workhorses.

Linky to Story

That is a bit healthy for most budgets and in reality, the eye, I believe, could honestly not see the speed difference in 1 core or 20 cores. I suppose in a server enviroment with all I/Os that it is subjected to, the 20 cores would be nice. Power usage and cooling would have to be some serious considerations...talker. :)

yep, these are not for us mere mortals. considering the price/performance/power/size advantages, these units will most likely seem like a bargain to those in the market for them.

I'd be happy if the software engineers would finally write stuff to take advantage of quad and octa cores. :rofl_mini:
