I read something about that in popular science. It seems the low end, cheap ones (or under 300$) are software driven and can be easily cracked. But there are hardware fingerprint readers out there; toshiba has a laptop that has one built in and tied in with the BIOS. But then again thats a couple thousand right there for better security. But yeah I wouldn't trust any software-driven readers.

Saw one at Costco today built into a laptop they had for sale. I think it was an HP but I don't honestly remember. The scanner worked perfectly for the guy that was manning the electronics demo counter area. I guess if it didn't let me in then it was secure enough to keep out the average person. It was neat and small too; hardly took up any of the valuable space on the small laptop it was on.

my question is, what happens if you get crazy glue on your fingertips or you're a carpenter, and in the process of using sandpaper, your prints are gone, how do you gain access to your computer

You hope the computer has the option to use a retina scanner as well to override the finger print scanner.

They're not really good yet... but usually, they can be bypassed with a password.

The one that I saw at Costco was set to the Just Kidding setting so you could get past it with your prints or by pressing CTL+ALT+DEL and entering a password. For the typical person, the just kidding mode should work just fine and it also provides a good backup in case your thumb falls off.

That was my exact point when I saw it. Who on earth besides spies need fingerprint scanners.
