Well I am sure most of you know by now about my new system. Now I am having a hard time deciding which OS's I should install:

My thoughts so far:

Windows XP PRO SP2 (32 bit)
Windows XP PRO SP1 (64 bit)
(When its finally released) Windows Vista 64 bit

Maybe a "nix OS as I hear they are more equipped to deal with 64 bit machines.

Perhaps

Kubuntu 64bit
Novel Linux 10 64bit
Gentoo 64bit

What do you all think?

Hi mate,

If I were u I'd go with Windows Vista 64 bit and/or Kubuntu 64bit.

Just run Vista beta for a few months until the final release comes out and then go buy it!! It'll save you money and let you save up to buy the newest OS which will keep you current longer!

yeah, unless you have issues with the vista beta, i would try it. any of the latest 64bit linux distros also are a good bet. have some fun, you can always reformat :smoke:

Thanks for your advice, guys. I guess I might be jumping the goat a bit too quickly. Let me at least wait for the PC to arrive first (lol)

At the moment I have

XP PRO 32bit and by time I have my PC will have XP PRO 64bit. Then I'll take it from there.

Do you guys think I should dual boot both of the os's?

many do, so if you haven't used a 64bit OS, i would say yes

You won't have any problems going to a 64bit OS!! I found it quite easy to transfer over to!

Vista 64bit would be OK- but be aware that you will not be able to use current versions past next June.
You should have a supported OS to keep going so you don't lose any records or applications. Use Vista as a test only to start getting use to it.
A dual boot would be your best bet- I reccomend Vista 64 and either XP64 or regular XP32 bit.

Good advice guys, tell me will normal games (heck its been a long time since I have had a PC that can play latest games, oh yeah I am gonna enjoy this) run on xp 64bit edition?

Certainly your games will run smoothly on xp64.
When i decided to install Win2k3 x64 as my main OS to replace XP32 i wasnt sure if i would be able to play all my prefered games... but for my surprise all of them ran very very well.

Hi Linoman,
I am not a big gamer but I have run Tomb Raider-Legends, FEAR, MS Flight Sim X Demo, and a few more on x64 without any problems. I have a 3800 X2, 2 GB PC3200, Foxconn MB with Nvidia 6150/430 chipset, and an ATI X1600 Pro. Like I said, I am not a big gamer but I have run those and all was well...talker.

On xp64 I have and do run,

Fear, Fear Combat, Oblivion, Half-Life 1/2/ Ep. 1, Quake 4, Counter Strike Source, Doom 3/RE (needs a patch I do beleave) GRAW, Far-Cry. and many more, I have never failed to get one running...at max settings...

Nice, thanks guys. Well the good news is that I now have XP 64bit (now all I need is the PC)

I will install XP 32bit dual booting with 64bit. So I can slowly phase 32bit out. Next post in this thread I'll be telling ya guys about my precious

i wouldnt recommend installing vista for at least a few months after its release....its highly likely there will be some critical issues to sort out upon its release
